SOCIAL PLAN APPROACH

The Department of Labour tabled a proposal for a Social Plan to the trade and industry and labour market chambers of the National Education and Labour Council (Nedlac) in October 1995. A task team comprising delegates from these chambers were established. The major task of this team was to develop a framework for a social plan that would prevent job losses where possible or ameliorate the effects of retrenchment on individuals and local economies in the event of large-scale retrenchments.

Turnaround Project Management

This involves presenting the Social Plan to potential companies, signing up the clients and managing the turnaround project. Turnaround Strategies follow two Social Plan Processes, one for businesses wishing to grow and one for struggling enterprises. (Up to 100% of all the services below are funded by the social plan). Productivity Performance Report (PPR)

This is a diagnosis of the performance of a business and is used to highlight areas of acceptable and unacceptable performance. This involves determining the causes of company success and failure. The PPR provides calculated analysis that indicates whether a company is viable or not as well as compiles the key performance factors which aid in the success of an enterprise. Lean Manufacturing

Within the field of production we consult on lean manufacturing is the systematic identification and elimination of waste from a process while increasing responsiveness to change. The six core methods listed below are the typical tools used to implement lean production systems. Implementation is also often sequenced in the order presented below.

Kaizen
Also known as rapid improvement processes, Kaizen are often considered to be the building block of all lean production methods. It focuses on eliminating waste in the targeted systems and processes of an organization, improving productivity, and achieving sustained continual improvement.

5S
5S originates from The 5S pillars, Sort (Seiri), Set in Order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke). It provides a method for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment. The 5S system reduces the waste and optimizes productivity through maintaining an orderly workplace, using visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
The TPM method engages all levels and functions in an organization in maximizing the overall effectiveness of production equipment with the goal of total elimination of all losses, including breakdowns, equipment setup and adjustment losses, idling and minor stoppages, reduced speed, defects and rework, spills and process upset conditions, and startup and yield losses.

Cellular Manufacturing/One-Piece Flow Systems
Cellular Manufacturing, or One-Piece Flow Systems, is work units arranged in a sequence that supports a smooth flow of materials and components through the production process with minimal transport or delay.

Just-In-Time (JIT) Production Systems/Kanban
Just-in-time (JIT) production enables a company to produce the products its customers want, when they want them, in the amount they want. JIT leverages the cellular manufacturing layout to significantly reduce inventory and work-in-process (WIP).

Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a system and collection of statistical methods for systemically analyzing processes to reduce process variation. A sigma quality level serves as an indicator of how often defects are likely to occur.

Productive Capacity Building
